How to Keep Mice Out of Your Home in Morton, IL (Before They Move In This Fall)

· Cedric Volkmer

If you own a home in Morton, Washington, East Peoria, or anywhere in the Tri-County area, late summer is the time to think about mice. Most people don't until November, right after they hear the first one inside a wall. The gap that came through has been open all along.

Mice come indoors for the same reason we turn the furnace on: your house is warm, dry, and full of food. The National Pest Management Association estimates rodents enter about 21 million U.S. homes each winter, mostly between October and February. Here's what to look for, and what keeps them out.

How Small a Gap Does a Mouse Actually Need?

Smaller than most guess. The Illinois Department of Public Health says a house mouse fits through a crack the size of a pencil, a little over ¼ inch. They also climb well and can jump 13 inches high, so the way inside isn't always at ground level.

Where we find the gaps in Tri-County homes:

The Signs Most Homeowners Miss

Mice are mostly active after dark, so you'll find the evidence first. The Illinois Department of Public Health says to look for droppings in cabinets and along walls, fresh gnawing on wood or wiring, tracks through dust, nests of shredded paper, and a musky odor in enclosed spaces. A mouse seen in daylight is worth noting, because that's off-schedule.

How to Mouse-Proof Your Home Before Fall

The Illinois Department of Public Health is direct about this. The lasting fix is to seal mice out by closing the openings they use, not just trapping the ones already inside.

The order matters. If mice are already inside, sealing first shuts them in and leaves you a dead mouse in a wall. Bring the population down first, then seal.

What Doesn't Work as Well as People Hope

We'd rather say this up front than have you spend money on it. There's little evidence sound drives mice out, so ultrasonic repellers aren't worth it. Cats and dogs catch mice, but don't provide effective control. Good sanitation makes traps work better, but on its own, it seldom clears an infestation.

No company can promise a house will never see another mouse. What we can do is find how they're getting in and close those routes.
